One of the most charming picture books I have read lately comes from Eerdmans Books for Young Readers published in 2009. BROWN BEAR, WHITE BEAR written by Svetlana Petrovic, illustrated by Vincent Hardy ($17.00). Alice received two bears from her grandmas. One gave her a white bear, the other a brown bear. Soon the grannies were arguing over which bear Alice liked best. Next the bears were arguing. Finally Alice could stand it no more so she placed one bear in her closet and the other on the top shelf in her bedroom. The bear on the top shelf started crying as he was afraid of heights. The bear in the closet was afraid of the dark. What will happen? Will Alice come and save the day? Oh, no. This is truly a fabulous treatment of cooperation and competition for the younger set.

The art is so appropriate. Kind of dreamy wash gives the characters a not-quite-real feeling. This set-up mood goes very well with those scenes which could be frightening possibly for the young reader/listener. All in all a most delightful volume to be treasured.
